Spotlight on Truman Birthplace

The Harry S. Truman Birthplace & State Historic site is located at 407 East 11th Street here in Lamar. “Approximately, 5,800 visitors from all over the country visited the Harry S. Truman Birthplace in 2014. The site brings in at least one international visitor per month coming for a tour,” reports director Beth Bazal. If you are a Barton County resident, and you have not checked out the birthplace, you need to make it a point to visit this attraction located in your back yard.

The site opened in 1959, and the staff is very proud of the way the birthplace restoration through the years. Recently it has gained a new roof ridge; it is currently stripped to the wood & repainted. Free historic tours are available at the site weekly Wednesday - Saturday 10:00 – 4:00 pm and Sundays in the summer noon to 4:00 pm. The gift shop is very nice with presidential items, period games, and even Christmas ornaments.

The Birthplace enjoys being a member of the chamber because of the connection with local business & assistance with advertising. They are looking forward to more education & special events on the site in the future. At the 2016 Truman Birthday celebration coming up in May, the birthplace will be showing a very interesting “Timeline” of the Presidents life at the event. The staff is also very excited to be working in conjunction with the Barton County Chamber to bring a combined Truman Day event in May. In the past, both organizations had separate events celebrating the life of our only President from Missouri but have joined forces for one great event. The location for the event will be held at the birthplace site and more details will be announced to the community in the coming months!
